NOTES

When young this fungus is white and egg-shaped but as it matures the outer membrane splits. The fungus has a wrinkled stem 3-11 cm long which is topped by a brilliant red dome with forked, knobbed branches with thickened ends. The spores form a dark greenish-black deposit on the branches. It smells of rotten meat.
