An annual plant which came originally from southern Europe and Asia but which is now found throughout the world and is cultivated commercially for it medicinal properties. It grows to about 100 cm and has a grooved stem and spiny pinnate leaves which are shiny green with white veins. The triangular bracts are hairless and spine tipped and edged.
