A large bodied, long-tongued bee about 24 mm long. It makes its nest in Aloe stems or tree branches. The nests consist of a row cells made of wood shavings glued together with saliva. The females have a special chamber on the abdomen in which they house mites. This genus was formerly included in the family Anthrophoridae.
