NOTES

A large social paper wasp with a long narrow waist and wings which fold longitudinally along a pleat when at rest. They build papery nests made of wood pulp and saliva. The nests have many cells in which the larvae are raised. They are fed with chewed up caterpillars. These nests are defended aggressively. At the end of summer the fertilised females overwinter in a sheltered spot and start new colonies the following season.
